Washington state health officials confirmed Friday that a resident has contracted a rare strain of bird flu, marking the nation’s first human case of avian influenza since February.

A Washington resident has been hospitalized with a different strain of bird flu than those seen in past cases, state health officials announced Friday.

It follows a "sharp increase" of cases of kept and wild birds with Wales now facing a "very high level" of avian flu risk.
