County officials are using approximately $28 million in federal funding to improve the building's HVAC, sprinkler and plumbing systems as well as other life-safety infrastructure.

The original contractor bid $295,000 for the project in 1896, but by the time the courthouse opened, it had cost $478,000.

A building that dates back to the 1800s has been vacant for 10 years. Plans are now underway to give it a new purpose.
