An annual meteor shower known for its fast movement and explosions of color that persist longer than average will peak this weekend, though experts say the shower’s peak won’t reach a maximum until just before the next century.

While the Southern Taurids already hit their peak last week, the Northern Taurids, active Oct. 13-Dec. 2 will be at their best Monday and Tuesday.

The annual Leonids meteor shower is due to peak next week, hopefully giving stargazers a treat to brighten up the dark winter evenings. The Leonids are due to show between November 3 and December 2 this year, and predicted to peak on the night of November 16, according to the American Meteor Society.

In Australia, the Leonid meteor shower will reach peak visibility on the night of November 17, radiating from the constellation of Leo and producing about 15 meteors per hour. The meteors are produced by dust grains left behind by Comet Tempel-Tuttle and the best viewing time should be in the early hours of the morning, just after midnight.

The second branch of the Taurid meteor showers, the Northern Taurid event, is about to take center stage. The Northern Taurids have been active since mid-October, but the shower will peak Monday night into Tuesday — with optimal visibility likely occurring after midnight — offering patient sky-gazers the best opportunity to view meteor activity,

Another astronomical event could be visible in the coming nights as the second branch of the Taurid meteor shower reaches its peak.

Fireball activity is expected to peak Monday and Tuesday night as Earth passes through a stream of comet debris.

Look up to the night sky Friday night for November’s full moon, 2024’s last supermoon, followed by the Leonid meteor shower set to peak Saturday night into Sunday.

The meteor showers will reach their zenith early Tuesday morning and come just a week after the Southern Taurids peaked. The sister showers only produce around five visible meteors per hour under ideal viewing conditions.
