But we can finally, officially celebrate the end of slavery in Alabama on our newest state holiday. Happy Juneteenth. It’s been a long time coming.

Here, some 85 years before that fateful day in Texas, Massachusetts approved the state’s constitution, becoming the first state to effectively abolish slavery.

By 1860, there were 180,000 slaves, and by the end of the Civil War, more than 250,000. The reason for the large growth in the number of slaves between 1860 and 1865 was a diabolical one.
