Come with me for a peek at Champion, Missouri, a tiny Douglas County community tucked in the woods. The center of the community is its general store, and today, folks came there to celebrate the birthday of its owner, Betty Henson. | Ozarks Alive

We often see “little free libraries,” but check out this exceptional example in Mt. Judea. Ladies in the tiny Arkansas town transformed the former post office into a lending library, where folks can borrow and return books at their leisure. #littlefreelibrary | Ozarks Alive

I was in Joplin today for the Missouri Preservation conference, and wanted to share a peek inside the Scottish Rite Cathedral. The historical building, tied to “one of several groups that are part of the worldwide fraternity known as Freemasonry,” says the Scottish Rite website, is celebrating its centennial this year, and the details inside are beautiful! For more info about the building’s history, visit Valley of Joplin’s website. | Ozarks Alive

While in West Plains today, I stopped by The Yellow House. This community arts effort “lives” in a 1903 Victorian house where concerts, art shows, meetings, craft fairs and more have long been held. A show recently ended, but Elohi Spirit Gourds still has some “gourdillos” on display. Watch for a story soon about artist Nancy Jacobson who creates them — and follow the Yellow House for updates about future shows, performances and how you can help the hub continue. | Ozarks Alive

The music doesn’t end with the close of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival day: It continues at the hotel — with a newly arrived musician sitting in on spoons. Any fans of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils recognize this fellow? (P.S. Tomorrow evening, the OMD plays on the National Mall!) #ozarksindc #2023folklife | Ozarks Alive

Turn the sound up for this one: Today may have been the first and only time a murderous hog has been sung about in a “secret” staircase at the Library of Congress. Thanks to The Creek Rocks for making history one folk song at a time! (Stay tuned for most posts about this Ozarks’ musical duo’s LOC fellowship and concert in D.C. this week…)d | Ozarks Alive

I think I made a personal record this week with two separate trips to Ozark National Scenic Riverways territory for stories in the area (watch for them soon). Yesterday’s visit included a stop at Big Spring. It’s another place I’ve visited several times, but I’m always struck by this profound natural landmark. It’s undeniably beautiful, but also of great significance given its massive output of water. Big Spring was the centerpiece of one of Missouri’s first state parks, a designation it receive

A mesmerizing sight stopped me last week in Barton County: Birds, birds and more birds, which never seemed to end. This was not your “normal” flight, at least compared to ones I typically see. I asked outdoor expert Bo Brown of First Earth Wilderness School about it; he said it’s something seen every few years but with increasing regularity. I asked if that could be because of global warming, or if it’s random. “It was around 10 years from the first one we located till another one was found, the

The Story Behind the Story: Buck Nelson I’m trying something new today and sharing the background of a recent story I wrote about Buck Nelson, an Ozarks man who believed he’d traveled to Mars, Venus and the Moon in the 1950s. Later, he held a series of space conventions at his farm near Mountain View, Missouri. In this video, I share some background of the story and how it came to be. If you want to read the full story, it’s available in the comments. | Ozarks Alive

Pie auctions: A longtime Ozarks tradition! The one shown here is held annually at the former Greenwood School in Webster County, which operated through the ‘60s. After the one-room school closed, a local community club bought the building; its members still meet there today, raising money with their annual auction and ice cream social. This year’s was held last Saturday. | Ozarks Alive

As we count down to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, I’m sharing stories of a few participants who I’ve been fortunate to write about. Up next is David Scrivner, a fiddler who regularly plays at the McClurg Jam. It’s a bit surreal to think he’s playing tunes tonight in rural Missouri, but in about a week, he’ll be playing them on the National Mall! Look for links to stories fearing David and McClurg in the comments. #OzarksInDC #2023folklife | Ozarks Alive

La Russell’s annual Pump Lighting is a tradition to remember. Every year, the tiny town and its friends gather on Thanksgiving night to illuminate its old-fashioned water pump — after a parade complete with the Humdingers, its kazoo band. It’s amazing moment of community! See a peek from 2024’s event here, and visit this link to learn more about its history: https://www.ozarksalive.com/stories/la-russell-celebrates-old-fashioned-water-pump-for-christmas | Ozarks Alive

I'm out at Pa's Posey Patch -- a flower farm near Cassville -- for a story with both sad and inspiring moments. Some of you know "Pa" Dennis Epperly, who started the farm several years ago with his wife, Brenda. Every year, the couple welcomes the public to visit their flower fields, which they create simply as something for people to enjoy, pick, and experience. This year, there were complications when Dennis had some health challenges, leading to multiple surgeries and hospital stays. He was w

Marideth Sisco, musician and storyteller, and Bo Brown, forager and musician, were honored yesterday as Living Traditions Fellows by the Missouri Folk Arts Program. The awards — which recognizes individuals “for their deep-rooted contributions to traditional arts within their vibrant Missouri communities” — were presented during the Old-Time Music, Ozark Heritage Festival in West Plains. The awards were presented to Bo and Marideth individually, but a special factor is that the two are friends.

before you yell at me it is quite literally my favorite book of all time ! but it is irresponsible to represent it as something it’s not, and it doesn’t actually improve understanding or access to lesbian and trans history to suggest that feinberg’s experiences were universal, or even that stone butch blues is accurate to those experiences. fiction isn’t real even when it’s gay and historical! #booktok #lesbiansoftiktok #bookrecommendations #lgbtbooks #usedbookstore #indiebookstore #butch #lesbi
