Sometimes when we rescue a bat we discover their lower body is paralyzed. Fortunately sometimes it is reversible 🙏 If we come to the conclusion with the vet that the bat will remain paralyzed, this is one of the rare cases where we euthanize. We won't condemned any animal to a life of suffering, and won't stick a flying animal in a cage without being able to move, that is too cruel! But until we come to that conclusion - we fight! 💪 Caring for a paralyzed bat is super intensive, feeding, clean

There is no greater joy than bats that have finished treatment! 🤩 The public called us. Our rescuers drove all over the country to rescue and transport them. Our carers and Nora treated them with love - and they recovered ❤ Now it's time. Last week, our volunteers came from all over the country to meet at the sanctuary, and our foster moms brought with them 31 bats that finished treatment, for release! Awesome Moran alone brought with her 17 bats! Nora checked them one by one to make sure they

A few nights ago, our awesome foster mom Adrienne was taking care of one of her baby bats. Adrienne is one of our oldest and best carrers, who besides lovingly fostering bats is also one of our emergency contacts that give emergency care at all hours of the day and night. Because she is a queen! 🫅 The cute pup that Adrienne was taking care of showed no signs that she was going to start flying soon. She didn't flap her wings to strengthen them and didn't practice flying without letting go of her

Bats are very smart, and quickly get to know their new environment in our foster homes or our sanctuary. Even more so for a bat like Quasi, whom we rescued as a newborn and Nora has been caring for him since, so for him she is mom. When she comes to feed Quasi formula, there's no need to take him out, he... will arrive :-D In his excitement he tends to eat too quickly, so Nora has to give feed him slowly and in small portions. Just look at him 😂 When pups are weaned, they move to the nursery wi

About 80 juvenile free-tailed bats found themselves trapped inside the first floor of an old building they unwisely chose as a roost. We could not see how they could get out on their own so we gathered them all and released them into our Bat Castle where they are free to leave at will tonight. We also rescued five emaciated orphaned bats in the same building and will hand raise them until they are able to survive on their own. These bats are lucky that the building owner has allowed us access so

It took a decade, but was worth the wait. 🥲🙌🦇 In 2013 we built a "bat castle" capable of holding over 100,000 bats. This was done primarily to help the thousands of bats roosting in old, depilated buildings in a nearby town. The town was being renovated and we knew many of the bat colonies would be destroyed if they did not find a safe place to roost. During this time, we also helped local businesses humanely exclude bat colonies in buildings that were scheduled to be renovated. Over the year

Although bats are our primary focus, we rescue all sorts of animals. Yesterday, while prepping the fruit bat's food, we spotted a little piggy out the kitchen window. He was running down the road being chased by the kiddos who owned him. We ran out to help (finally cornering him) and then found that they were trying to rehome him. He lived in a dog crate and of course needed more room. Staff member Natalie agreed to take him so he now has a new home. :) Last night he had his first bath and settl

How about a Rosie pup-date? Our little carollia girl is healthy, growing well, and has graduated to hanging out in our geriBATric ward while she better learns to self feed. We are not sure yet if she'll be able to fly and join the general fruit bat population, but if not, we know that Tinkerbell will welcome Rosie to her party hut 💜 | Bat World Sanctuary

Smiley came into the clinic today for a quick check up, but wasn't entirely enthusiastic about being awoken from his nap. Smiles is an elderly African fruit bat, having been retired to our facility many years ago from an educational exhibit. Despite his past as an education animal, Smiley prefers to be left alone with his colony, which is just fine by us. See that green on his head? That is a temporary, non-toxic paint we use to mark the bats that we need to monitor. Caregivers found a small scr

We save everything (or at least do our best to do so). 🐈 Two starving kittens were dumped on our road and ended up at our wildlife feeder. They were so hungry they were trying to eat corn. We have a live-stream cam at the feeder and were alerted by Bat World supporter Shereen, who spotted them and alerted us. Along with cats & kittens, we work with our local animal shelter to save dogs, sheep and goats, and also rescue wildlife in need. Be sure to watch the entire video to see that both kittens
