This adult male big brown Bat came to our facility last week from Richmond Ky very dehydrated, starving and very cold. He also has a hurt back right foot and his right wing is torn. He is doing much better. He has gained some weight and he is now eating good. We still have him on antibiotics and pain meds. He is out of the critical stage and in a guarded stage now. While working in an attic, an exterminator accidentally knocked something small out of place—a big brown bat! The little animal curled up on the floor, and although he was barely moving he appeared to be breathing. He must have been sleeping in the attic to escape the cold before being woken up. As the exterminator looked at the poor little bat, his heart went out to him – he wanted to help! He carefully placed the bat in a bucket and called TWC’s hotline for help. The Big #BigBrownBat Brown bat has not yet figured out how to eat worms on his own, so I'm feeding him a couple times a day (normally he'd still be in hibernation and would not need to eat, but since he is so active, he needs calories). He doesn't react much to just being handed (with tweezers) a worm, but if the heads are removed and a little of the viscera squeezed into his mouth, he eats them right up! How do bats hydrate? On the fly! Thanks to one of our DEEP Wildlife Division biologists for capturing this great video of a big brown bat drinking water. Please note: seeing a bat during the day does not always mean that it is sick or rabid. This is normal behavior for a thirsty bat! Big Brown Bat Release! Sound on! Our big brown bat enjoyed some mealworms for lunch the other day. This bat still needs to be fed by hand by our Animal Care staff. Big brown bats are insectivores and will be coming out of hibernation soon. They typically go into hibernation around November and remain there until spring when insects are plentiful again. #bigbrownbat #mealwormcrunch | Squam Lakes Natural Science Center

We currently have three juvenile Big Brown Bats in care - and they are growing up fast! All three bats came to us after failed reuniting attempts as infants. They have now weaned off formula and are beginning to eat mealworms on their own. The single female bat in this video can be seen eating and stretching out her growing wings! Big Brown Bats are one of the more common species of bat found in Virginia out of 17 total species. Bats are declining worldwide, due to habitat destruction, disease,

This big brown bat is checking out his enclosure. As he tries to make sense of why he can’t move through the transparent wall, we get a glimpse at his body through his wing membranes. Soon enough he finds a spot to climb where he will hang and rest. Bats are true hibernators. We make sure they have the calories they need through the winter months which is a difficult time for a bat if they have not stored enough fat. 🦇❤️ #millstonewildlife #nhwildlife #wildlife #animals #wildliferehabilitation

This animal is known as a Big Brown Bat, despite the fact that it only weighs around 15-26g and can fit in the palm of a hand. Bats are key hunters in our ecosystem and can consume their entire body-weight in insects each night. Thanks for keeping those bugs away! If you want to learn more about local wildlife and have a chance to see it up close, come to the Rocky Mount Library on October 21st, from 5:30-6:30pm, where the Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center of Roanoke will be bringing some of th

We have admitted several big brown bat infants in the past few days, all have dropped from their mothers due to environmental conditions or their mother sadly not returning and they become dehydrated and fall to the ground where they are discovered. They require very specialized nutrition, temperature and humidity, and we are so lucky to have the knowledge and dedication of Sam Cox, our Wildlife Specialist/ Intern Coordinator who has dedicated research and training on bats including a visit to a

This adorable big brown bat is one of ten bats that we are currently caring for. Some previous posts have discussed our bat patients, but we haven't shown much of the actual care process! Our bats came in for a range of reasons. Some were found caught in sticky glue traps, while others chose insufficient roosting spots to hibernate and were affected by cold stress. Several of our bats are in our artificial hibernator, which is essentially a bat cooler that maintains a constant temperature to mim

Seeing bats in the winter? You might spot one flying on a warm winter afternoon. That is when some bats will come out of hibernation to stretch their wings, get a drink of water and snack a few bugs from the air before the night turns cold. But these sightings seem to be more common the last couple years across New Jersey, possibly because of milder temperatures. As long as a bat is flying normally and not struggling, it’s probably just fine. These are likely to be an Eastern Red Bat or a Big Br

Our 12 Big Brown Bats 🦇 that we had to over-winter because of injuries that we cared for & fixed, babies from June that just didnt grasp the technique of flying, some were found in places people didnt want them and some just woke up to early from hibernation & would have starved and frozen to death had they not gotten to us. We got them all back outside in our Bat 🦇 Cave today & theyre all doing great! Theyre eating, drinking & practicing their flying skills! Hopefully theyll all be released w
