Gentle giants bubble net feeding explained 👇 Humpback whales team up for this clever strategy. They dive under schools of fish or krill and blow bubbles in a rising spiral, forming a “net” that traps and confuses the prey, herding them into a tight ball. The bubbles act as walls the fish won’t cross. Then, the whales lunge straight up from below with mouths wide open, scooping up huge mouthfuls! - please note that the footage was filmed under research permit on 3x zoom, don't film wildlife with

Humpbacks engage in a unique & complex feeding method known as bubble-net feeding. First they dive below a school of fish, and then blow bubbles through their blowhole to herd and corral their prey. Two engineers from Cal Tech recently came out with an interesting model proposing that humpbacks exploit these bubble nets for feeding via loud vocalizations. Meaning, it is possible this bubble curtain is being used as a wave guide to concentrate the sound toward the center, along with the fish! 🎥:

These humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are engaging in a unique and complex feeding behavior known as bubble-net feeding. 🐋 This type of feeding is often done in groups as large as 60 whales. This behavior is not believed to be instinctual, but learned. #SealifeSaturday #science | Science Channel

This is how our day started on August 21, 2023, in Southeast Alaska. We learned to listen for the humpback whale call that indicated the bubble net was almost finished and the group was about to come up through it. Unfortunately, it never gave us a direction to look! We were surrounded by snow-capped mountains and breathtaking shores while we watched these magnificent creatures! Video by Cheré @Moms Whale Watching. | Moms Whale Watching

This month, we're spotlighting our friend the #HumpbackWhale! And with #Thanksgiving just around the corner, we thought you might be interested to know more about how humpbacks enjoy their feasts. Bubble-net feeding is a strategy of hunting that, when done as a group, involves a careful and coordinated set of behaviors among the whales. Whales engaging in this type of feeding will dive below schools of fish and use the bubbles from their blowholes to push fish close to the surface. Typically, on

Recently, the topic of the sounds of Humpback Whales was brought up. This is a good example of some of them and one that is fun to watch of bubble net feeding! Other than separating the first few seconds to quiet the expressions of frustration by our Captain, this video is completely uncut! Bubble-net feeding is a cooperative hunt where humpbacks trap fish with spiraling walls of bubbles, then surge upward together to gulp the whole school. The birds enjoy the leftovers. #unearthingthewild #alaska #travelalaska #seward #visitseward #whalewatching #adventure #sewardalaska #humpback #humpbackwhale #saltypaws | Unearthing the Wild Photography & Adventure

Rare, but very appreciated behavior, bubble net feeding is one of the few behaviors documented where Humpback Whales group together for collective feeding. Otherwise mostly solitary whales, this type of behavior is uncommon to see - but when we get lucky enough to see it we love it!! 😍 - Video from July 2025 #alaska #juneau #whalewatching #bubblenetfeeding #humpback | Jayleen's Alaska

Ever seen this before? 🐋✨ What you’re looking at is a bubble net feeding circle, created by none other than the famous humpback Boomerang. Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ The whale dives below a shoal of fish. 2️⃣ It exhales streams of bubbles while swimming in circles. 3️⃣ These rising bubbles form a “net” that corrals and traps the fish into a tight ball. 4️⃣ With incredible precision, the whale then lunges upward through the bubble ring, mouth wide open, swallowing thousands of fish in a single str
