The Feathertail Glider is the smallest gliding mammal in the world with an average weight of only 12 g. Its gliding membrane, which extends from its elbows to its knees, allows the animal to glide more than 20 m between trees. It clings to smooth surfaces with its large serrated toe pads. This beautiful creature is in rehabilitation with registered carer Tennille and the great team at Wildlife Empire. Please never attempt to rehabilitate orphaned wildlife. They need specialist assistance if found

Here is 18 seconds of a Feathertail Glider joey to give you a chance to marvel at the smallest gliding mammal in the world in action. With an average weight of 12 grams fully grown this little busy body is another reason to protect eucalypt forests from further degradation and destruction. Thank you Wildlife Rehabilitation Queensland for allowing us to share this little critter and you can follow his story on TikTok at - https://www.tiktok.com/@kangarootales?_t=8jVL1yhNK66&_r=1 | Wild Animals Au

Now THIS is love 💛 Seven tiny Feathertail gliders were found in a storm-damaged log at St. Georges Basin, but sadly only four have survived. They are being hand-fed specific possum/glider milk by carers with baby puree six times a day. 📹: D. Colbert from Wildlife Rescue South Coast Inc | ABC Illawarra

Feathertail gliders can glide from tree to tree at distances up to 20m! Before they can glide, however, they’ve got to climb. With the help of their toe pads, this small marsupial is an expert climber. Their toe pads are serrated for fiction and contain numerous sweat glands that act like suction cups to help them climb well, even on surfaces as smooth as glass. Keeper Mary captured this video of our feathertail gliders enjoying a fruit skewer treat of cantaloupe and yam. Feathertail gliders are marsupials native to eastern and south-eastern Australia. They are the smallest gliding mammals in the world. Their long, feather-shaped tail acts like a rudder when gliding, hence their name. To see them in the Mouse House, take a little time to allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness of their nocturnal exhibit next time you visit. | Bronx Zoo

Michael Atkinson on Instagram: "Making a Feathertail Glider Nest Box 🐭 📸 The possum revisited over the last few nights. Still no sign of the gliders. If they move into the nest box I’ll put some cameras up. 🐈 Another reason to keep cats inside. ⚖️ The Feathertail Glider is the smallest gliding mammal in the world with an average weight of only 12 g. 🛬 It is distinguished from other small marsupials by its feather-like tail fringed with long stiff hairs, which acts as a rudder during flight.
