This 7-minute film of a noctule 'mating roost' is condensed from over two hours of footage. The bat began 'singing' at 75 minutes following sunset and sang sporadically. There was a good deal of social 'chatter' with other bats that also visited the roost but the occupant was still alone when I left. 🦇 Time to drop in on our male noctule bat. Last month, we saw him successfully: 👏 Evict a great spotted woodpecker from a cavity; and 👏 Defend the cavity from a grey squirrel. 🐿️ The squirrel-bat saga continues! 🦇 This footage was captured on 8 December. Just a few hours apart, the grey squirrel squeezed into the woodpecker hole; it even looks to be chewing some of the decaying wood inside the cavity. Later that night, our noctule bat re-appeared.
