Building this section of wattle and daub wall took forever. Assembling it was tedious. But the worst part? Filling in the gaps to stop the drafts. Time for daub! #WattleAndDaub #Building #DIY #HomeImprovement #Construction | Timeline - World History

All wearher woodland warrior wattle & daub work building the cob wall using a traditional natural mix of sand, clay, straw, lime, ash & water. For this first layer we use quite a dry mix & then apply it to the Hazel wood wattle frame building the wall upwards from the base. As the season changes we have had a lot of rain so have to wrap / cover the work to let it cure slowly without it getting washed away. Excellent work from carpentry student Rhys with a superb mix consitency & nice daubing! #v

Learn how to weave wattle for wattle and daub! It’s flexible but kinks as you work it into the hurdle. Putting a foot down helps. This is great for historical building and crafts. #WattleAndDaub #Weaving #Construction #HistoricalBuilding #Crafts | Timeline - World History

Sealing drafty walls? Here's a lesson in wattle and daub. Four key ingredients: water, straw, mud—and dung! Yes, animal waste acts as a binding agent, holding the soil together. Therapeutic, even. Plus, straw adds strength. Have you tried this technique? #WattleAndDaub #NaturalBuilding #DIYHome #EcoFriendly #HomeImprovement | Timeline - World History

Wattle and daub part 3. . Adding the second layer of daub, a mix of 50:50 sand and clay with a little finely chopped straw to bind. . I got a little creative with this one and really enjoyed the process. The next step will be to do some more research into recipes for the final layers of render. Perhaps incorporating fermented clay, lime, manure? . This project is mostly for fun, practice, and experimenting, it will be exposed to the elements and I'm not expecting it to last hundreds of years. .

🛖 Tip to make wattle and daub WITHOUT cracks, for perfect and perfectly accurate Iron Age walls 💪 🚨 Clay is NEVER the main ingredient in daub 🚨 👉 it just is the glue binding together "aggregate" of various sizes (sand, gravel, grit, rocks..) and "fibres" (chopped straw, grasses, horse / cow manure...). 🪨 Aggregate = compressive strength 🌾 Fibres = tensile strength Clay as glue But.. clay SHRINKS AND CRACKS when it dries, so if your walls have cracked it's simply that ✨ your mix has too mu

Here we can see the progress we are making on our wattle and daub walls. Wattle and daub is an ancient technique that uses some sort of flexible framework to attach a clayey soil mixture to. We are heavily influenced by the traditional framing and wall system that the Japanese have been using for centuries. We have adapted the traditional Japanese system to suit our needs and conditions here in Costa Rica. Here you can see the treated bamboo wattle with the first coat of daub and the level coat.

Amazing old building with lots of wattle (the sticks) and daub (the ´mud’) panels to repair. This one has the more upper class close studding, which means the wattles are essentially just short staves sitting in grooves (so, stave and daub?!). We’ve taken the daub off of these panels, removed the inappropriate modern paint and cement render, saving the original daub to be re-used. There are a few different styles of panels here, including one which is an infilled original window, which has a mor

🏗️ The #1 mistake we see in wattle and daub? Too. Much. Sand. Comment "Workshop" to get a link sent direct to your inbox! Sand adds strength — but in wattle and daub, you don’t need strength, you need flexibility. The wooden frame carries the load. Your daub mix should move with it, not crack against it. 👀 Watch to learn why a fiber-rich daub is lighter, easier to apply, and way more earthquake-resilient. 🛠️ Want to get hands-on with techniques like this?
