Grog can make such a difference to the clay body you’re working with. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always preferred clay with a bit of ‘tooth’, grog, these are particles of fired ceramic that are added back to a clay body to add texture, but it does a lot more than that too. It adds strength, as the particles knit together and create shapes that are less likely to warp or slump it’s fired but this comes with the downside of the clay itself being more brittle during this leather hard perio

The dreaded reclaim! Honestly, as dreaded as it is, there is a surprising amount of clay that can be reworked into a usable state each cycle. I usually tell people that at least a 3rd of the clay you wedge up will end up in your reclaim. This is through trimming, clay stiffening from using it to secure your pots to the wheel, throwing water and of course pots that just don’t make the cut either because they aren’t up to par or had a flaw along the way. Even if you keep all your pieces, you will

This cup is going into the kiln tomorrow morning. It will be cool enough to open on Friday morning. I will post the results then. The clay is the fabulous grogged pink clay from potclays. It’s a really nice clay to throw with, trimming is a little tricky but not impossible and it’s ok to calve. All in spite of the grog. 🙂 The colour when fired in electric oxidation to cone 9 is toasty. #pottery #ceramics #craft
