Spaniel, Dotty, is part of our team learning to detect the odour of the disease in urine which could lead to faster, more accurate and non-invasive diagnosis and an increase in the number of people taking up screening. He starts on a sample of urine, contaminated with lab-cultured E. coli at a dilution of one part per 500 to make it ‘easy,’ then moves to a one part per 1000 dilution which is what the clinical level of infection is believed to be. When our dogs have passed all their training they move on to the all-important scentwork phase which is where they learn the odour of their client when they are about to become unwell. First they learn to find odour samples on their Instructor and when they do they get a treat reward. Eventually, once they are doing this regularly and reliably , they will move to practising alerting with their actual client.
