Each spring, endangered Bogong Moths start an amazing migration across Australia to our alpine zone. At the same time, Mountain Pygmy-possums wake up from hibernation hungry for nutritious Bogong Moths to eat. But over the last few years, Bogong Moths have not been arriving to the alpine regions in the numbers needed, raising concern for the survival of the moths and leaving the Mountain Pygmy-possums without their primary food source. We’re helping Zoos Victoria scientists track where they are

The gentle fluttering of Bogong Moth wings is music to our ears! Look at this amazing swarm! This unique Endangered species is vital to our natural ecosystem, including as a pollinator of native plants and as a food source for the Critically Endangered Mountain Pygmy-possum. Unfortunately, Bogong Moth numbers have declined in recent years due to threats including extreme weather, habitat destruction, light pollution, insecticides and introduced predators. Once abundant, Bogong moths are sadly now a rare sight in the Australian Alps 🏔️ Rising temperatures have pushed them to the brink, with their population plummeting by a shocking 98%! Without action, these vital pollinators could disappear forever. As a migratory species and a critical food source for threatened Aussie animals like the Mountain Pygmy-possum, the Bogong moth highlights the urgent need for Australia to end its reliance on climate-damaging fossil fuels and halt the destruction of

Arriving around November, Bogong Moths cover the walls of the southeastern alpine caves. Up to 17 000 moths in one square metre. They create a massive influx of high-fat, high-protein food to alpine ecosystems. Once counted in their millions, the Bogong Moth is now endangered. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the moth tracker, a citizen science initiative, gathering open-source real time data on the dates, locations and numbers of Bogong Moths travelling during the annual migration period.

Meet the traditional owners tracking bogong moths. The bogong moth, or deberra in Taungurung language, is a vital food resource for animals across Victoria’s Alpine country and its rapid decline has implications across the ecosystem. It’s one of more than 2,000 Australian species listed as under threat in what scientists are calling an extinction crisis. Our new series, Last chance, looks at Australia’s extinction crisis that this election is ignoring. Follow via the link in our bio. Reporter: P
