Many of our bats are snoozing comfortably as winter approaches. Hoary bats have thick fur including on their tail, keeping them warm even during the coldest of nights. What is known about hoary bats, there are documented records of hoary bats entering a state of torpor (hibernation) during winter, particularly in studies that have tracked individual bats over extended periods, showing they can hibernate for several months in certain conditions; this is considered a relatively recent discovery re

Yesterday was a big day for 19 big brown bats. Many of the bats were soft released into a known colony. They were quite talkative while a handful of wild big browns roosted behind the bat house (their ears can be seen in the video). Three of the big brown bats were released close to where they were found. It was a beautiful night to bid happy flights to our rehabilitated bats. #pabatconservationandrehabilitation #pabatconandrehab #bigbrownbats #eptesicusfuscus #releasethebats | Pennsylvania Bat

Repost from @elmwoodparkzoo We’re celebrating bats at our next Eco-Family Program alongside @pa_bat_rehab 🦇 Every October, we recognize Bat Week, an international celebration dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of bat conservation. These nocturnal creatures are often misunderstood, but they act as valuable predators to many insects, including mosquitoes! Join educators as we kick off the celebration with hands-on activities, games, and an up-close look at these creatures of the

Flight school for 32 bats including our juvenile eastern red, big brown and Seminole bat. Look how beautiful our juveniles are flying. They are happy to be out stretching their wings since Ida and two cold nights. You can hear their flutters as they pass by the phone. They are such curious little flyers. The katydids are also happy that it’s warmer outside ❤️ Our release season will be coming to an end in a few weeks. #pabatrescue #releasethebats | Pennsylvania Bat Conservation and Rehabilitatio

Last weekend and earlier this week several bats were released both from our organization and our sister organization @delaware_bat_rehab It was so beautiful to watch these bats return to their natural habitat. First release is a silver haired bat and the second is an eastern red bat which were rehabilitated at DBRC and the last three clips are big brown bats here at PABR. It's been unseasonably warm the past few days so our bats are WIDE awake! The past week the night time temperatures were in the 30's signifying that it's time for the bats to start curling up for winters arrival. Last night we released 8 big brown bats including a cat caught bat that had a large wing tear. This boy was ready to fly the night sky once again. With his determination and eagerness to fly free, we watched as he effortlessly flew repetitive laps around the flight enclosure. Bats must sustain flight, land appropriately, forage and avoid obstacles before they are considered releasable. He indeed was ready for release and flew beautifully (last clip). The most rewarding part of rehabilitation, is

Thank you Emily and Kim for highlighting the importance of bats ❤️🦇 • @whyy Alongside 12-foot-tall skeletons and witches on broomsticks, bats often grace porches and doorways this time of year. At @pa_bat_rehab, the nocturnal animals are affectionately known as “sky puppies.” As white nose syndrome devastates Pa.’s bat population, rehabilitators are essential in safeguarding the species that play a vital role in the region’s ecosystems. ✏️: Emily Neil 📷: Kimberly Paynter | Pennsylvania Bat Con

This time of year you may find that bats more frequently show up in people’s homes. It’s important to remember these 4 things if you find a bat in your home: 🦇 Do not touch it! Bats are a Rabies Vector Species (RVS) in Pennsylvania, meaning they are more likely to carry rabies than most other mammal species. This doesn't mean every individual has rabies, but it is important to be safe when handling RVS species. If you find a bat in your home, wear gloves and use a towel or blanket to catch the

Soaking up the morning sun. Crushing the myth associated with bats and sunlight. Many species including cave bats will soak up a little morning and evening rays. Tree roosting bats especially enjoy the warm rays, grooming and stretching before retreating to their late night (morning) snooze. Insectivorous bats are considered microbats and have a wide variety of predators both during the day and night. Imagine all the challenges they have to overcome throughout their life. Watch as a rehabilitated, federally threatened, Northern long-eared bat receives a transmitter before being released back into the wild. This bat was brought to Centre Wildlife Care after it was found on the ground. The bat was examined and determined that it was in good health and could be released. Pennsylvania Game Commission Bat Biologist Greg Turner places a tiny transmitter on the small bat using a special glue. The process takes just a few minutes. Once the glue dried, the bat was taken b
