Living with wildlife: Bats
Bats are highly beneficial to people, and the advantages of having them around far outweigh any problems you might have with them. As predators of night-flying insects (including mosquitoes!), bats play a role in preserving the natural balance of your property or neighborhood. To learn more about creating habitat for bats and to certify your ...

Here come the bats 🦇 Thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from an old warehouse for a nighttime feast of insects. Texas is home to several large roosting sites where bats give birth to pups each summer. Bats are more than mysterious night creatures — they are essential for healthy ecosystems, thriving forests, and even the foods we eat. A single bat can eat its body weight in insects every night, helping protect crops and forests without harmful pesticides. October 24–31 is Bat Week, a time to recognize one of our planet’s most remarkable and misunderstood mammals. Worldwide, bats comprise nearly 20% of all mammal species, providing essential services to ecosystems and human economies alike. At

Bats are one of my favorite mammals to rehabilitate! They are so very misunderstood and so smart! They can learn their names and they love attention from me. They are extremely soft and fluffy, but yes they do have a mouth full of teeth so they can eat those flying pesky bugs! (Ann & Elvis are insectivores, so all they eat are bugs) These two are also my licensed USDA Educational Ambassadors so don’t go out and be picking up bats thinking they are all sweet like these are. 🖤 Bracken Cave appreciation post 🖤 Located just 20 miles outside of San Antonio, TX, Bracken Cave is home to the largest bat colony in the world — home to over 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats. Bracken Cave is a maternity roost, meaning expectant female bats return to roost in Bracken in the spring, after overwintering in South and Central America, to birth their singular bat pup. Witnessing the emergence in person is an unforgettable sight. #battok #bats

Bats aren't spooky, they're awesome! Bats help protect our environment and crops by controlling insect populations, dispersing seeds, pollinating plants and distributing nutrients. AND they're cute! Have you ever had a chance to see a bat up close? Check 'em out and learn more about bats with CDFW Statewide Coordinator for Small Mammal Conservation Katrina Smith in this video that celebrates bats during Bat Week and Halloween. Like many mammals, bats can carry rabies but if you give them space,

🦇 Fun Fact Friday 🦇 Did you know that our straw-colored fruit bats are some of the largest bats in Africa? With wingspans stretching up to 3 feet, they’re sometimes called “flying foxes”! Despite their size, these gentle giants are strict fruit-eaters. They play a vital role in nature as seed dispersers, helping forests grow and regenerate! 🌱 | North Florida Wildlife Center
